It’s Golden Week in Japan – to those who are unfamiliar with this term, its basically an extended period of public holidays and this year it happens to be a five day long weekend!
Cherry blossom season may have ended, but the flower festival in Japan still continues. Lush purple wisteria flowers are in full bloom annually during this time of the year. It was my first time experiencing the hype about wisteria gardens – and let me tell you, it was completely worth it!
Wisteria flowers are grown on arbor trellises that drape down with a cascading waterfall-like effect. It’s absolutely breathtaking to see these delicate vines carrying the beautiful purple blossoms. Wisteria season occurs once a year from the end of April through the first week of May – it’s a short lived festival but an absolutely unforgettable experience.
I visited the Kameido Tenji Shrine wisteria garden. It’s definitely smaller compared to some of the most popular places like the Kawaguchi Fuji Gardens or the Ashigaka Flower Park (Ps. I’ve made a mental note to visit this next year without fail).
Nevertheless, for being a first timer at the Kameido wisteria garden, it didn’t disappointing. The shrine is surrounded by a residential area, houses and tall buildings and comes as a surprise. The Tokyo SkyTree (read my previous blog to know more about SkyTree) is clearly visible from the garden adding a beautiful touch to the picturesque view.
The shrine was PACKED. Wisteria garden is considered to be one its main attraction. It took a while getting around the shrine but I wasn’t too bothered about it – the gorgeous wisteria flowers grabbed my attention every time I looked around.
The entire garden was sprawled with the beautiful lavender colored flowers as it dangled from the wisteria trellises. The wisteria flowers at the Kameido Tenji Shrine are said to have been planted during the Edo period!
The premise was a pretty sight at every corner with purple flowers, red bridges and ponds. You could also spot a dozen over turtles in the pond!
This blog post would be incomplete without sharing with you my #OOTD deets. I love how the weather is changing and leaning towards those carefree layering days. I wore my newest obsession; this cotton midi dress with a pair of off-white block heels and kept my handy-dandy leather jacket. This outfit was super comfy and spring appropriate while strolling amidst a canopy of cascading wisteria – easybreezy!

Yesterday’s been a great day admiring the romantic beauty of wisteria gardens. I definitely cannot wait to visit the larger wisteria fields next year!
